HOW TO GET NEW ZEALAND VISA FOR HONG KONG CITIZENS?

Hong Kong citizens travelling with a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passport or a British Overseas passport can enter New Zealand for periods of up to 90 days by obtaining the New Zealand eTA.

The NZeTA is not a visa but has been obligatory for Hong Kong citizens since October 1st, 2019.

Do I need a visa waiver for New Zealand from Hong Kong?

For trips that are up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes, citizens from Hong Kong can apply online for the electronic travel authority rather than a traditional visa.

The eTA is quicker and easier to obtain than a New Zealand Embassy visa.

The eTA New Zealand for Hong Kong citizens is valid for a total of 2 years, and it allows multiple entries of up to 90 consecutive days in New Zealand.

Hongkongers who plan to transit through Auckland International Airport on their way to a different destination also need to apply an eTA to transit.

To stay longer than 3 months or for other purposes, citizens of Hong Kong need a visa to travel to New Zealand. There are various types of New Zealand visas available to visitors from Hong Kong.

To complete the eTA New Zealand application from Hong Kong, travellers need to fill out the eTA New Zealand application form by entering information including:

  • Full name, date of birth, and nationality
  • Contact details
  • Travel plans
  • Health and security information

eTA visa waiver New Zealand requirements for Hong Kongese

The New Zealand eTA requirements must be met by all eligible foreign nationals from visa waiver countries, including Hong Kong.

The basic requirements include:

  • Having a valid Hong Kong or British Overseas passport that remains current for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure date from NZ
  • Paying a service fee and IVL tourist levy (if applicable) using a credit or debit card
  • Completing the NZeTA online application fully and accurately

Once the application has been approved, the NEW ZEALAND VISA FOR CANADIAN CITIZENS is sent to the email address provided on the application form.

For Hong Kong tourists, it’s important to remember that the passport required for a successful application must be an HKSAR or British National–Overseas passport.

Hong Kong citizens holding an NZeTA still need to meet all the other entry requirements for New Zealand upon arrival such as being a bona fide visitor and holding sufficient funds to cover their expenses during their stay.

How long does it take to get an NZeTA from Hong Kong?

Although the NZeTA is usually approved within 1 business day, travellers are advised to complete the online application at least 3 business days before departure.

Once approved, applicants will receive their electronic travel authorization via email.

Travel to New Zealand from Hong Kong

Travellers with an approved NZeTA can travel from Hong Kong via an international airport or cruise ship.

There are direct flights from Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) to Auckland International Airport (AKL). There are also flights with one or more stops from Hong Kong to popular destinations including Christchurch, Hamilton, and Queenstown.

On arrival, passengers arriving from Hong Kong need to present:

  • Passport they used to apply for the NZeTA
  • Return or onward flight tickets
  • Completed New Zealand arrival card

Applicants who have more than one passport due to dual nationality need to travel to the country using the passport they used to apply for the eTA. It is only valid when used with the corresponding travel document.

Requirements to fly from Hong Kong to New Zealand during COVID-19

Travellers from Hong Kong with a valid NZeTA can now enter, they must be fully vaccinated and hold the following documents:

  • PCR medical certificate for New Zealand
  • Certificate of full vaccination against COVID-19
  • New Zealand Traveller Declaration

Travellers who do not meet New Zealand’s vaccination requirements need a special exemption to enter and must enter Managed Isolation and Quarantine.

Entry requirements for Hong Kong nationals may be updated at short notice during the coronavirus pandemic. Travellers must make sure they have all the latest information.

NZeTA to travel from Hong Kong to New Zealand by cruise

Citizens of Hong Kong arriving in New Zealand on a cruise ship should also apply for an NZeTA. They should complete the online application process as explained above.
